Professional Experience
1993-2006: working for BP Exploration & Production Ltd in the Colombia Business Unit (now the Andean Business Unit - BU)
In 1996 I was assigned as Casanare Senior Medical Advisor
In 2000 I was assigned as Colombia BU Health Manager
I was responsible for the direction, design and coordination of the Health Plan for the BP Colombia BU
During the next 4 years assigned to this position we were able to build an exemplary health team. Together with Senior and Line Management, operational line members, contractors and the whole Safety and Environmental team we were also able to build and implement the first BP Exploration and Production Integrated HSE Management System (OHSAS 18801 and ISO 14001), externally certified by ICONTEC (Colombian Standards Bureau).
I have been sharing our best practices in Occupational Health and Medical Emergency Response by travelling and advising BU’s in countries such as Azerbaijan, Turkey, Canada, Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago, Bolivia and Venezuela.
I have been central in developing Occupational Health programs such as Hearing Conservation, Occupational Dermatitis, Skin Cancer Prevention, Muscular-Skeletal Injuries related to Manual Handling, Repetitive Movements and Cumulative Trauma Prevention, Food Handling, Alcohol and Drug Prevention, Cardiovascular Risk Prevention & Occupational Stress Prevention.
Whilst these are all programs designed and implemented in BP Colombia I have also been central in sharing them at a BP Segment level.
In 2004 I was also accepted into the BP Group Professional Recognition Program (PRP) as the first BP Segment Exploration and Production Occupational Health Advisor. This job has widened my scope of work at a segment level, giving support and advice to the whole Exploration and Production Segment.
The PRP programme recognizes the leadership and core competencies of a group of highly qualified individuals inside the organization that are willing to share and sow best practices around the world.
Communication skills are vital, considering the very diverse and inclusive working environment of the BP Group.
I also continued developing my health role, becoming the Andean (Colombia and Venezuela) BU Health Team Leader.
During my last 2 years in BP, I have deputized for the HSSE Manager and was nominated as his first line in the succession plan.
