ULTRA SOUND TECHNOLOGY DEFINED
Fact: Anything that moves emits ultrasound to some degree the trick is to hear it and properly interpret the findings. With the proper equipment an air leak the size of a human hair at 90 PSI can be detected at 50 feet or greater. A bearing as it rotates produces ultra sound, this sound is a signature for condition of rollers, lubricant, condition of surfaces in the bearing etc. The training and equipment with experience can predict problems and eminent failure well in advance of a catastrophic event. Ultrasound is your first indication of problems usually far in advance of vibration and heat signatures. A chaffed bearing will increase its ultrasound level ahead of vibration and heat most all of the time.
What can you hear with Ultrasound
Hydraulic Oil flowing through a pipe, hydraulic leaks past valves, seals, pistons, cavitation in pumps and condition of all forms of pumps. Steam traps, bearing condition and lubrication problems. We even fill bearings with ultrasound attachment to prevent over lubrication. All gas leaks and vacum leaks, we can check integrity of vessels with a ultra sound generator this prevents the need for pressure testing In electrical equipment we can detect tracking, corona and arcing well ahead of heat diagnosis and safer since we do not have to open panel. All mechanical components such as gear boxes, engines, transmissions, any thing that moves can be heard and diagnosed. It depends on equipment and experience. Royce Hamer Technician In Ultrasound.
