Materials and Welding Engineer
Key Roles:
• Specification of materials, coatings and weld procedures for control system components working successfully to tight timeframes as an individual as well as within a small design team.
• Review and approval of drawings, material and welding specifications relating to several hydraulic control components.
• Preparing and presenting engineering documents, e.g. for advising bolting materials across the product range, a qualification program for a new design hydraulic pressure intensifier and removal of unfavourable materials from legacy designs.
• Supplier quality – taking a co-operative approach with key suppliers to improve valve component manufacturability, tungsten carbide coating quality and hardness through very large forgings.
• Performing failure investigations, internally and in collaboration with external test-houses and presenting the findings.
• Developing orbital welding capability, achieving the training and qualifying personnel, developing work-shop procedures, qualifying Weld Procedure Specifications, implementing record keeping systems and resolving technical issues that required the input of several different departments.
• Formulating materials selection proposals for specific projects, which requires an eye for detail to ensure any important points are picked up at the bid stage and at contract award so that materials, coatings, hardness ranges, NDT requirements etc. is right first time.
• Supply chain engineer on a large sub-sea production equipment project involving the analysis of materials resource planning timetables with the project schedule to allow early identification of potential material supply problems and conflicts and acting as an interface between supply chain management and engineering.
• Identifying and assessing environmental and safety hazards related to engineering activities and ensuring that all current health, safety and environmental legislation was met during all activities.
