Additional Information
Oil and gas exploration and production operations have the potential for a variety of impacts on the environment, such as:
a. Human, socio-economic and cultural impacts. Exploration and production operations are likely to induce economic, social and cultural changes.
b. Atmospheric impacts. The primary sources of atmospheric emission from oil and gas operations arise from flaring, combustion process, airborne particulates from soil disturbance, particulates from other burning sources. The principal emission gases include carbon dioxide, methane, volatile organic carbon, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxides, etc.
c. Aquatic impacts. The principal aqueous waste streams resulting from exploration and production operations are: produced water, drilling fluids, sewerage, spill, leakage, cooling water, etc.
d. Terrestrial impacts. Potential impacts to soil arise from : physical disturbance ans a result of construction, contamination resulting from spillages, etc.
e. Ecosystem impacts. Plant and animal communities may also be directly affected by changes in their environment through variations in water, air and soil quality,
f. Potential emergencies. Several incidents can occur such as: spillage of fuel, oli, gas, chemicals and hazardous materials.
The potential for oil and gas operations to cause impacts must be assessed. By using proper application management techniques and best environmental practice, many of the potential impacts will be eliminated or mitigated.
