I built the Case department for Global Geophysical in Algeria over the last 2 years, I and my Algerian workers keep the Cases running in a difficult environment in the Sahara Desert, For nearly 18 months I was on my own, and I still managed to keep them running on the bare minimum of parts & tools. I know the Case tractors well, and have attended factory Case courses. Whilst working on a seismic crew in Algeria I had to overcome many different problems that were occurring with the vehicles I was maintaining.
There were issues with the blades that were fitted for cutting the sand where they were not strong enough so I upgraded them with strengthened modifications of my own. The track tension system had an over pressurizing problem which I cured by fitting pressure relief valves in the hydraulic system. Track wheels would dismount themselves due to a manufacturing problem; this was amended with a simple weld. Sand was a major issue and it caused damage to radiators, electrical cables and engine fans, this was controlled by fabricating and fitting screens and shields.
In doing all of this I also manage a department with a number of Algerian nationals working for me, and despite language and cultural differences I communicate and work well with them, and they all profess that they enjoy working with me as their supervisor. I personally interviewed them for my department and these people became not just better mechanics but good mechanics under my control.
