Instrumentation Technician

Applying my Control & Instrumentation experience and skills obtained within the Mining Environment to alternative Industry such as Oil & Gas and also expanding / gaining more experience.

As an Instrumentation Engineer at Mototolo Concentrator, I was responsible for Control & Instrumentation – optimizing / maintaining Plant Equipment regarding Instrumentation applications and installations, ensuring equipment reliability / efficiency with regards to their operational functioning. With my Siemens PCS7 Experience, my responsibilities covered Process Control Efficiency / Stability / Optimization relating to Control Loops and Software Code Functionality aligning with Anglo Platinum strategy and standards regarding Process Control and managing all Control & Instrumentation changes / modifications as required by Concentrator Management. In addition, my responsibilities covered the coordination / planning of initiated In-House Instrumentation Projects in accordance to the requirements of Plant Technical Superintendent ( Process / Metallurgy ) – some of these Projects had fallen into the Asset Optimization Scope.

Prior to the appointment at Mototolo Concentrator as Instrumentation Engineer, Anglo Platinum Process Control Department arranged a secondment for me onto the 200 Ktpm Mototolo Concentrator Project from August 2005 to May 2006, forming part of the DRA ( EPCM Contractor ) Project team fulfilling the role as Instrumentation Designer – Control & Instrumentation. Responsibilities during the Project was to assist the Process Engineer ( Electrical ) in identifying the requirements / concerns regarding Instrumentation as per Project Scope and Design - marking up and redlining P&ID’s, generating an I/O schedule, working through master specifications and generating Site Specific specifications ( Instrumentation ), generating Equipment Datasheets based on Process Data Requirements and setting up / populating an Instrumentation Database using InTools, drafting and sending out Procurement Enquiries, adjudicating Tenders received, generating Project Purchase Orders in conjunction with Project Accountant / Secretary as per allocated Project Costs ( Instrumentation ), participating in HAZOP’s studies, Review / Approve site Equipment Installations, punching Equipment Installations, participating in Cold / Hot Commissioning.

Although I am employed as an Instrumentation Engineer at Mogalakwena Concentrators, I perform the tasks of an Instrumentation Technician or Instrumentation Specialist and Instrumentation Supervisor in terms of Control & Instrumentation with a hands-on approach / technical approach to any task. I am comfortable in performing the physical work as Instrumentation Technician and I can also manage or coordinate Control & Instrumentation tasks / personnel - having 6 years of Supervisory experience.

I have extensive experience in both Maintenance / Project Environment in the Control & Instrumentation Engineering field ( 13 Years ), covering Metallurgical Process such as Copper / Platinum and Diamonds at various Companies in South Africa.

Of the 14 years of service, I have 9 years extensive Control System experience working with Siemens PCS 7 ( 8 years exposure ) and various other systems such as Allen Bradley / GE Fanuc PLC systems and Moore APAC / Mycro DCS systems together with various SCADA Systems.

I have also 6 years Supervisor experience in Control & Instrumentation / Electrical discipline of the 14 years, but still prefer a technical hands-on approach to my field of expertise especially in my work approach.
