Network Design Engineer

Engineer working towards professional certification (CEng) seeking to maximize network service portfolio, availability and quality-of-service by applying emerging technologies and industry standards.

Conducted research on the requirements of an island-wide transition from TDM-based PDH to an all-IP SDH microwave backbone. This would provide a multi-service platform for GSM, CDMA, WiMAX and DIA subscribers and corporate customers. Interfaced with vendors to refine design, scope of works, installation details and schedule. Reviewed vendor proposals for the upgrade and provided management with technical guidance. Devised a method to facilitate parallel installation and phase migration to the new solution while minimizing service disruption.

Authored comprehensive transmission network design for the launch of a new GSM network. This included frequency plans, traffic plans, tower drawing, rack drawings and node configurations. Completed post-installation assessment to determine the effectiveness of the transmission design by comparing the Pathloss-modelled microwave network against actual link/segment performance statistics. Based on these results, recommendations to improve performance, mitigate vulnerabilities and provide additional network redundancy were made.

Developed innovative transmission design to merge two independent radio access networks following the acquisition of a regional competitor. Final solution increased network coverage and added 1900 MHz service, EDGE and Blackberry features to operator's portfolio. Oversaw its execution in Antigua, Barbados and Dominica and documented an implementation plan that was replicated in other Caribbean territories.

Authored and implemented transmission design for a CDMA network launch comprising of 20 base stations. Coordinated the integration of new BTS's onto an existing radio access network with minimal impact on live services. Expanded the earth station with new satellite carriers to facilitate connectivity to remote core nodes (e.g. MSC, HLR, PSDN) within the distributed network.
Conducted research and developed an action plan to expand the earth station of a regional broadcaster from ad-hoc coverage of individual events to 24/7 dedicated channel.
