Project: Impact of Tile and Brick Clay mining on Land use pattern and Ground Water quality in Lower Chalakudy basin: A remote sensing and GIS based study.
Identified the tile and brick clay mining areas, differentiated abandoned mines and working mines using Google images and LISS IV image characteristics.
Compared the land use changes with the aid of geoprocessing software’s and assessed the effect of clay mining and associated activities in the land use over the forty years. Prepared distribution maps for various parameters of the ground water through surface creation using results of hydrochemical analysis of ground water samples and identified vulnerable zones to contamination due to mining.
Correlated the ground water quality within the mining hotspots as an attempt to assess the impact of clay mining on the groundwater systems in the basin. Discussed the impacts of land use changes over the years and the evolution of new land use classes due to Clay mining in the basin affecting agricultural practices and wetland ecosystems, alerting the NGO’s and other State government bodies regarding the degrading environmental health of the river basin.
2009
Project: Hazard and Risk Evaluation of Landslide prone areas in Western Ghats, India. (Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) funded project)
Conducted field surveys, collected and analyzed several parameters and identified landslide prone areas using overlay analysis incorporating factors such as topography, geology, climatic conditions and influence of anthropogenic activities.
Created awareness among local governing bodies and rural communities. Productive work carried out on slope instability on the hilly tracts of the weathered metamorphic terrains in the Western Ghats in Kerala (INDIA) and recommended practical solutions to deal with slope instability problems in the study area.
2009
Conducted mine and ore drive mapping programme in several open cast and underground coal and uranium mines of India under Coal India Limited (CIL) and Uranium Corporation of India limited (UCIL).
Used geostatistical techniques like Krigging to find out ore reserve estimates of low-grade Uranium ores.
Discussed on various structural geological problems encountered during mining operations.
