MAIN PROJECT:
“EFFECT OF HEAT TREATMENT ON ZNS-NANOCRYSTALS DOPED SILICA”
DESCRIPTION:
ZnS nano particles embedded in SiO2 matrix consisted of well dispersed nearly mono sized nanoparticles. Zinc sulfide doped silica xerogels are prepared by sol gel method varying the molar ratios of the dopant ZnS and Silica precursor TEOS. Apart from molar ratio, other parameters like the pH of the medium, the aging conditions and drying conditions were changed. The aging condition most suitable to the formation of a transparent xerogel is dry aging as these gels did not show appreciable changes in crystal size and crystal structure during high temperature heating. The characterizations studies were done by XRD and TEM images. TEM image is used to study the morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles. XRD analysis is used to calculate the diameter of the crystal size and phase transformations. It was seen that silica has masked the nanocrystals of ZnS from the effects of high temperatures namely (i)size increase, (ii)ZnO formation and (iii)Zinc blende transformation to Wurtzite. The results show that wet aged gels show a significant rise in the crystal size at high temperatures. ZnO crystals were not present even at high temperature. Vacuum treatment has eliminated oxidation of ZnS, even with silica.
