Professional Experience

Dr. Abass has 40 years of experience in the oild and gas industry. He began his career as a petroleum engineer in Kirkuk, Iraq in 1977. At Halliburton he has served as Technology Consuultant and Team Leader in Intevep, PDVSA in Venezuela and Dunca, Oklahoma respectively, and at Saudi Aramco as Senior Petroleum Consultant at the Advanced Research Center in Dhahran, saudi Arabia. From 2014-2017, he was Professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines.

Starting with the Halliburton Research Center, I led the rock mechanics team focusing on developing innovative technologies. I led a rock mechanics team and acquired $ 2 million lab equipment to perform R&D in the area of completion and stimulation. New technical services were developed. The patented products were implemented with success that convinced management to transfer the technology to Venezuela. I was the Halliburton representative stationed at the PDVSA Research Center. In Saudi Arabia, I was the Champion for the Unconventional Resources focus area leading a multidisciplinary team directed to develop and follow up on an R&D roadmap for unconventional resources’ development in Saudi Arabia that include tight reservoirs (sandstone, carbonate and source shale). I introduced and obtained approval for $ 20 million budget for high power laser lab which has been established at the Advanced Research Center of Saudi Aramco. At the Colorado School of Mines, I become the advisor to 5 MS and 6 PhD students; already graduated 2 PhD and 2 MS and plan plan to graduate 2 PhD and 1 MS in May 2017. I acquired and become the research program director of the $1 MM KOGAS project on development of a shale gas field in Canada. I was also assigned to be the coordinator for the $1 MM Halliburton Fellowship Program.

Eductation

Dr. Abass holds a B.Sc. from the U. of Baghdad and M.Sc. & Ph.D. from Colorado School of Mines- all in Petroleum Engineering. He holds 17 US patents, and has published and presented numerous technical papers, articles and book chapters. He is SPE Honrory and distinguished member.

Certification

In 2015 I earned the highest award given to 0.1% of SPE members around the world as selected to be receive the Int’l SPE/AIME Honorary Membership (http://www.SPE total membership w.spe.org/awards/distinguished.php), the 2012 SPE Int’l Award- Completion Optimizations and technology http://www.spe.org/awards/cot.php , and the 2012 SPE Middle East Regional award- Completion Optimizations and Technology http://www.spe.org/awards/regional-completions-optimization-technology-awards-recipients.php, the 2009 SPE International Award- Distinguished Member http://www.spe.org/awards/distinguished.php, and the 2008 SPE Middle East Regional award- production operations http://www.spe.org/awards/regional-production-operations-awards-recipients.php. He served as SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2011/2012 season.
