Two Contracts to Assuit Barrage and Hydroelectric Power Station

Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has awarded two contracts pertaining to Assuit barrage and hydroelectric power station valued at L.E. 4 billion. The project is backed by soft loans from KfW - German Bank for Reconstruction. Earlier media reports revealed that the contract for the 32 MW hydro electric power station went to OCI - Orascom Construction Industries at L.E. 620 million leaving L.E. 3.38 billion for the barrage and related facilities. The later will improve irrigation at almost 1.65 million feddans in Mid Egypt representing about 20% of total plantation areas. Works on the Barrage contract is scheduled for completion in 64 months.
