His Majesty King Abdullah II and Korean President Lee Myung-bak held talks in Seoul that focused on ways of forging closer cooperation between Jordan and South Korea, mainly in the economic and investment fields. The talks, which were attended by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II, Princess Raya Bint Al Hussein, Prince Rashid bin Al Hassan and Prince Zeid bin Raad, also dealt with means of boosting cooperation between the two countries in the energy, infrastructure and vocational education fields. The King voiced happiness for meeting the Korean president again at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between them.
The foreign ministers of the two countries also signed today a Memorandum of Understanding to expand relations in various fields. The King said that Jordan will be a model in the peaceful and safe use of nuclear technology and expressed hope that his proposal to establish a body to combat smuggling of nuclear materials, will receive the support of South Korea during the Nuclear Security Summit, which opens tomorrow. The King thanked the Korean president for his country's support to Jordan to establish a nuclear plant at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. He also voiced satisfaction over increasing student exchange, mainly Jordanian students studying at Korean universities. Jordan, the King said is keen to further boost economic ties with South Korea as the Kingdom enjoys both security and stability as well as an attractive investment climate. His Majesty pointed to a number of major infrastructure projects being carried out by the Kingdom in vital sectors, highlighting opportunities available for the Korean private sector to take part in these projects. King Abdullah also thanked Korea for hosting the Seoul Summit, adding Jordan is keen to strengthen relations with South Korea in various domains. At the meeting, two leaders reviewed the current situation in the region, political developments at the Arab level, efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East and solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Korean president welcomed His Majesty's visit to Korea and his participation in the Seoul Summit. He also voiced appreciation of King Abdullah's role to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East and of the King's efforts to bring about comprehensive reforms in the Kingdom. President Bak said his country was keen to forge closer relations with Jordan through its contribution to various projects in Jordan. The talks were attended by Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Director of the King's Office Imad Fakhouty, Royal Court Advisor Amer Hadidi and Jordan's Ambassador in Seoul Omar Al Nahar. The talks were attended on the Korean side by the Korean foreign minister as well as a number of senior officials. Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh told Petra that the King's visit to South Korean comes to take part in the Nuclear Security Summit which opens tomorrow, and to hold talks with the Korean president. Both countries he said signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost bilateral ties in various fields. Judeh said Jordan is keen to benefit from the Korean expertise in the nuclear energy domain, noting that talks focused on ways of promoting economic relations between the two countries. |
