Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hisham Qandeel said Egypt's water security is maintained and consumption from the Lake Nasser reserves is an ordinary procedure that does not represent a negative phenomenon. The High Dam was specifically built for this purpose, he said, referring to the time when the River Nile flood decreases. Meanwhile, the minister noted that the amount of irrigation water discharged to waterways this year are not less than the previous years' but even more.
Complaints coming in from some areas on irrigation water are due to misuse of water and the increase in the crops that consume a lot of water such as rice, he added. Irrigation sector workers are working night and day to provide water to each and every planted area in Egypt, the minister stressed during a visit to Sharqiya governorate on 5/6/2012 where he inaugurated several projects. He added that he would embark on a tour of a number of Nile Basin states within the coming few days to reach consensus on the Entebbe agreement, which was not binding to downstream states, Egypt and Sudan.
