Interesting details were released on the annual sales of Ketchup, tomato paste and fresh tomato on the vegetables market estimated at L.E. 6.6 billion. That was reported in the media quoting (a recent released) economic report claiming total tomato plantations are now estimated at 545,500 feddans representing 34.7% of total vegetables plantations. All three products embark on reasonable export potential in Arab & GCC countries, also in some European countries. In terms of the tomato winter plantations, Qena ranks first with 625,000 tons representing 16% of total tomato winter crop. Second to fifth ranking include Sharkiya, Menia, Giza & Sohag with 7% share of the same total.
With regards tomato summer plantations, estimated at 2,747,000 tons, here Noubariya ranked first with 1.1 million tons followed by Alexandria, Beheira, Giza and Beni Suif with 544,000 tons, 474,000 tons, 349,000 tons and 279,000 tons respectively. (Earlier media reports estimated total annual tomato crop to range 6 to 6.5 million tons, yet waste of the crop during handling, warehousing & transport was estimated at 721,000 tons, i.e. more than 11 %).
