Further to our earlier reporting on the subject actual government wheat purchases from farmers till date increased by 900,000 tons to 3.5 million tons and that compares with 2.6 million tons in the past season. This was reported in the media quoting Dr. Gouda Abdel Khalek, Minister of Supply & Home Trade, indicating that the development drove the country's strategic wheat inventory to hit the 5 million tons level considering ex stock inventory and shipments in transit.
Earlier media reports indicated that Egypt's annual wheat imports range around 7 million tons. N.B. To which extent the construction of new silos (8 horizontal silos are planned) and the strict rehabilitation and renovation of existing silos to prevent any harm to stored quantities would be professionally managed on all levels, that remains to be seen. Same is said to existing wheat warehousing facilities at state owned flour mills.
