Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab stressed that achieving peace and security is inevitable for bringing about economic development and prosperity in the African continent.
"Without peace and security, no prosperity will be achieved for African nations," Mahlab said while addressing the opening session of the 18th summit of the COMESA in Addis Ababa. Mahlab said the current political, economic and security challenges in Africa are undermining overall economic and sustainable development efforts. The main goal of setting up a free trade area is to expand the scope of the African market to help improve competitive capability of products, meet local needs and increase exports, he said. Achieving industrial development requires more attention to technical education and training to hone skills of workers, he said. He also underlined the importance of providing an appropriate atmosphere for attracting investments to produce high-tech products. The Egyptian premier hoped for merging the three economic blocs in Africa, saying this would be the first step before merging the entire African continent in one market to cope up with the North blocs. Mahlab also invited African leaders to attend the opening ceremony of the New Suez Canal project in August. |
