Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano has said that Egypt has strong expertise in the field of nuclear energy.
Amano said in a lecture he delivered at the Foreign Ministry HQ on 7/4/2015 that Egypt also has two reactors. He said the IAEA is looking forward to boosting cooperation with Egypt in the coming stage, adding that the agency would be honored to become a partner of Egypt in this territory. Amano acknowledged that Egypt is an important partner of the IAEA, noting that Cairo effectively partakes in activities of the agency and shares its expertise in the field of science and technology. He said his agency offers knowledge and technology and sets international safety standards and guidelines regarding nuclear facilities. Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab also met with the IAEA chief and called for a Middle East free from nuclear weapons. In statements while receiving Amano, Mahlab said "This kind of weapons does not only threaten the region, but also poses a threat to the whole world". Mahlab reiterated Egypt's keenness on bolstering cooperation with the IAEA in the field of peaceful use of nuclear power. The PM said "El-Dabaa nuclear power plant is a hope for all Egyptians", adding that the phenomenon of terrorism poses a threat to the entire world. Amano, for his part, hailed a leading role played by Egypt in Africa, noting that cooperation is underway between the IAEA and the Egyptian authorities on El-Dabaa nuclear power plan. He added that Cairo will host a workshop on the plans to support nuclear security in the Arab countries during the period from 13 to 16 April. |
