US Vice President Joe Biden and Iraq's Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi will co-chair a discussion on key areas of cooperation between the US and Iraq this Thursday, the White House announced in a statement. The leaders "will chair a session of the US-Iraq Higher Coordinating Committee, bringing together officials from across the US and Iraqi governments to discuss energy, economic cooperation, and other issues in the bilateral relationship, under the auspices of the Strategic Framework Agreement," a White House statement said.
Al-Abadi met with President Barack Obama, and also met with Biden to focus on what was described as "recent security developments inside Iraq," the statement said. Biden "reaffirmed the support of the United States and the international community for Iraq's efforts to reclaim its territory from ISIL," while Al-Abadi "expressed his appreciation for US cooperation and support," the statement affirmed. Both leaders "agreed on the need for continued progress to forge a more inclusive and durable Iraqi political order," as well as "plans to help Iraq stabilize areas liberated from ISIL." They further discussed "regional issues and agreed on the need to support Iraqi sovereignty and independence and seek to lower sectarian tensions across the region," the statement concluded. |
