The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) has signed a USD 20 million grant agreement with Jordan, a measure aimed at mitigating the burden of coping with the influx of Syrian refugees.
The agreement was signed by Director General of KFAED Abdulwahab Al-Bader and the Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Emad Fakori, in the presence of Kuwait's Ambassador to Amman Dr. Hamad Al-Duaij and several Jordanian government officials. In a statement to journalists, Al-Bader said that the agreement aims to implement developmental projects in the healthcare and educational sectors, in addition to municipal services. The projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2018, he noted. The grant agreement seeks to enhance the efficiency of public services in areas inhabited by Syrian refugees, ensuring that they get unimpeded access to these services, Al-Bader said. Moreover, on the medical side of the projects, the Jordanian government will, through the grant agreement, procure 25 fully equipped ambulances for the 25 existing hospitals in the 12 Governorates of the country, Al-Bader revealed. Two medical centers in the Governorates of Al-Mafrag and Maa'n will be revamped while a medical center in the capital Amman will be overhauled, he added. In the educational wing of the project, nine schools will be augmented by 50 additional classrooms and two schools containing 20 to 30 classrooms will be built, he disclosed. Meanwhile, 100 km of municipal roads of 10 meter width and 5 cm thickness will be repaired as well as water drainage in 13 different municipalities, Al-Bader added. KFAED has issued a total of 26 loans to Jordan, amounting to USD 580 million for a plethora of developmental projects in various sectors. |
