Prime Minister Sherif Ismail has officially inaugurated East Port Said Canal, allowing the start of navigation operations.
The new project was executed in cooperation with the US Great Lakes Company and the Belgian Dredging International Company. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chairman of Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish along with a number of ministers, governors and foreign diplomats. Earlier in the day, the first mega shipping vessel crossed the new East Port Said Canal en route to the waterway of Suez Canal. This is the first operation of the canal, which is scheduled to be opened in an official celebration later in the day in the presence of Prime Minister Sherif Ismail along with a host of ministers, agents of international navigation companies and a host of ambassadors. The new canal, which is 9.5 km long, links the East Port Said Harbor with the northern entrance of the Suez Canal at the Mediterranean. It was constructed to provide direct access to the harbor without hindering traffic along the Suez Canal. |
