Jordan and Russia have signed a cooperation agreement for regulating peaceful uses of nuclear energy, the government in Amman said.
This is a part of a wider agreement for using the Russian technology in building and operating the first nuclear power station, to generate electricity, in the Kingdom. The agreement was signed by head of the Energy and Mineral Resources Regulatory Commission Farouq Hiyari and chair of the Russian Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service Rostechnadzor Alexey Aleshin. The deal goes in line with the relevant Jordanian legislations and international criteria that require a monitoring and supervision of all phases of the Jordanian nuclear program, Hiyari said. Under the five-year agreement, the two sides will cooperate to develop the legislative basis in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, and exchange of experience in licensing of activities in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy, he added. In addition, they exchange experiences in oversight and control activities, including development and implementation of inspection programs. According to Jordanian official statements, the first nuclear station in the Kingdom will enter service in 2014-2025 to produce 2,000 megawatt of electricity. |
