Tunisia's phosphate stocks will deplete, forcing a halt in exports because of protests at the Gafsa phosphate plant, said Najeh Sellimi, an official at Groupe Chimique a Gabes, the state unit that sells phosphate.
Protesters demanding jobs this week staged sit-ins and caused a stoppage in production. The North African country produced 4 million tonnes last year and output for the first six months of 2016 was 1.86 million tonnes. Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, whose new government came to office a week ago, has promised a tough line with protesters, after millions of dollars of losses to the state in recent years because of disruptions in phosphate production. Tunisia's economy is already struggling after two major Islamist militant attacks on foreign tourists last year hurt the tourism industry, which accounts for 8 percent of the gross domestic product and is a major source of employment. |
