Ukrainian Ambassador in Cairo, Hennadiy Latte stressed the importance of the convocation of the Intergovernmental Ukraine-Egypt Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation in Kiev on December 19-20.
Egyptian International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr and Ukrainian Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Kutovoj will co-chair the commission's meeting that will review boosting bilateral cooperation in the economic and trade fields. In an interview with MENA, the diplomat underlined the importance of holding the Egypt-Ukraine Business Council to discuss issues of mutual interest. Trade exchange between Cairo and Kiev amounted to 1,646 billion dollars in the first nine months of the current year, Latte said, adding that Egypt is Ukraine's largest trading partner in the Middle East and Africa. Egypt is the main importer of wheat and corn in the whole world and the second largest importer of Ukrainian products, he said. Egypt and Ukraine face the same geopolitical challenges, he noted, expressing confidence that Egypt, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, will achieve tangible progress in the near future. The regional strategy for the development of industrial zones involved light and heavy industries, including pharmaceuticals, foodstuff, automotive, electronics, textiles and petrochemicals, Latte said. He also voiced his country's keenness on investing in infrastructure projects in Egypt, particularly in the Suez Canal. Since 2009, Ukraine's state-has run gas company Naftogaz has been working in Egypt's Western Desert, he underlined. Shifting to the Ukrainian tourism, Latte said that nearly 310,000 Ukrainian tourists visited Egypt in 2015, expecting the same number of tourists to visit Egypt this year. As for efforts exerted to fight terrorism, the diplomat said that his country has been carrying out counter-terrorism operations for more than two years, pledging support for Egypt in its efforts to uproot terrorism. |
