Minister of Environment Khaled Fahmy stressed the importance of expanding in the use of renewable energy as one of the mechanisms to overcome the impact of climate change.
This came during Fahmy's speech at the inauguration of the 9th Egyptian-German Renewable Energy Day organized by the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry for Economics Affairs and Energy . The event was attended by the German ambassador and representatives of the Electricity Ministry as well as major German firms in the field of solar energy. The minister said that the parties which signed the Paris climate accord aim at reducing greenhouse gas emission as soon as possible to face climate change. He affirmed the need to help the economy reduce carbon via a number of mechanisms such as using renewable energy, noting that Egypt has technologies of renewable energy including wind, solar energy and generating electricity from thermal energy, which began in 2006. Fahmy underscored that a number of measures were adopted during 2013 to pave the way for expanding the use of renewable energy such as the new electricity law, adding that a strategy was outlined to expand the use of renewable energy till 2035 as part of the sustainable development strategy. The minister further reiterated that Egypt seeks to overcome the obstacles and challenges hindering the implementation of renewable energy ventures via clear programs, expanding in investments in this field and merging the private sector as well as commercial banks to invest in this domain. |
