Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi said that countries in the Middle East region must work on bolstering cooperation and seeking development, stressing that bickering on issues of conflict will lead to destruction and chaos.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Al-Abadi's statement came during his officials talks Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri in Tehran. Al-Abadi stated "we must make great efforts to develop relations and pursue mutual interests. " Al-Abadi added that the majority of the region's population consisted of youth and it was important for the leadership in the region to utilize their skills or else "this force can become a destructive stream. Just as terrorism also uses the power of youth and turns them into devastating elements." Regarding containing the so-called Islamic State (IS), the Iraqi Prime Minister stressed that terrorism should not be given a chance to thrive and expressed his country's strong resolve to annihilate the terror organization. On the issue of the Kurdish independence referendum, Al-Abadi said that while the Iraqi troops were fighting IS, Kurdistan decided to go on with the vote. This led the Iraqi central government to apply pressure on Kurdistan and enforce its authority in northern Iraq, said Al-Abadi who called on the Kurdistan regional government to abide by the Iraq constitution. On his part, Iranian Vice President Jahangiri congratulated the Iraqi government and people on victories against IS and other terror groups. He also commended Baghdad on imposing its authority over the issue of the Kurdish referendum, affirming Tehran's strong stance with the Iraqi people and leadership. |
