Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohamed Abdel Aati said that Egypt faces great water challenges triggered by real deficits in Nile and underground water. He made the remarks in a speech at the fourth Arab water forum.
The minister said this deficit is compensated for by the recycling of water. Indeed, Egypt is a major wheat producer and water consumer, Abdel Aati acknowledged, warning that the increase in population will cause the deficit to further rise. In addition, he said that the country also faces climate change, which is one of the most important challenges. Abdel Aati underlined that the state has set up a 2050 strategic plan based on the purification and treatment of wastewater for agriculture use in a bid to deal with climate change. |
