Prime Minister Sherif Ismail attended the signing ceremony of an agreement on setting up a wind farm in Gabal el Zayt area in the Gulf of Suez region.
The agreement is signed by the Egyptian Company for Electricity Transfer and a consortium including Japanese and French companies along with Orascom firm. Attending the signing ceremony were the ministers of electricity, finance and investment and international cooperation. The project is aimed at generating power from wind under the BOO system at a total capacity of 250 megawatt; around one third of the total wind-generated power in Egypt, said Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker in press statements. The estimated investment cost of the project would hit 400 million dollars, he added. An experimental power production of the project will be added to the national power grid by mid 2019 with the all-out production being adding to the grid by the end of the same year, he pointed out. The project comes within the framework of increasing the use of new and renewable energy in Egypt so that production would reach 20 percent out of the total power production by the year 2022. The figure would increase to hit 42 percent by the year 2035, he added. |
