Minister of Trade and Industry Tarek Kabil headed to Belgium to participate in the 10th UfM Trade Ministerial Meeting, held in Brussels on March 19, gathering the 43 trade ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean member states.

Co-chaired by Jordanian Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah and European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström, the conference discussed several trade-related priority areas and propose actions in the fields of conformity assessment and acceptance of industrial products (ACAAs), and the fight against illicit trade and counterfeiting, among others.

“Despite our respectful differences, the Mediterranean Sea has long bound us all together as one shared region, with one shared future, and shared interests,” Kabil said in his keynote speech at the meeting.

Trade, he said, has always been the main “binding force” of countries across the Mediterranean, highlighting Egypt’s commitment to boosting trade and investments with its neighbors and partners within the UfM platform.

The minister expressed great pleasure at the expansion of the Agadir Agreement and welcomed its two newly-acceding members, Lebanon and Palestine.

He emphasized that Egypt endorses the action plans on “Sectoral Cooperation” and “Fighting against Piracy and Counterfeiting,” stressing the need for a more flexible approach in implementation, that takes into account the special circumstances and needs of Southern Mediterranean countries.

Kabil also highlighted Egypt’s support for the new Pan-Euro Mediterranean Preferential Rules of Origin, pointing out that some countries in the region will need a transitional period to implement aspects of the new convention. “Participation of the private sector should be embedded in all UfM initiatives, as it is only through these market operators that we boost trade and create more jobs,” he noted.

The minister, moreover, cautioned against the immense risk of marginalization often faced by the Southern Mediterranean due to preference erosion. “We need to identify new and imaginative solutions in order to set up a region of integrated markets and supply chains.”

Kabil stressed that trade between Mediterranean partners should be re-invigorated, through the modernization and geographical expansion of trade agreements in the region, and wider inclusion of smaller partners who have sometimes been marginalized.
