Dr. Nasr: “We work on accelerating the implementation of the Sinai development plan according to the President’s directives”.

On the sidelines of the ECOSOC’s HLPF held in New York, the Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Dr. Sahar Nasr and Deputy Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Dr. Murad Wehbe have signed a letter of intent to support Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula Development Program, in presence of the Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmin Fouad.

The letter of intent provided for the UNDP’s provision of a grant to Egypt to support the project backed by several international financial institutions and Arab funds.

Dr. Nasr emphasized the government’s keenness on speeding up the implementation of the Sinai Development Plan to the fullest extent possible according to the President’s directives in order to develop the area as soon as possible, thereby contribute to providing major development projects which, in turn, would provide women and youth with job opportunities. Within this framework, Dr. Wehbe highlighted the UNDP’s keenness on providing the necessary support to complete development projects in Sinai Peninsula, commending the implementation progress of the Sinai Development Project.

The meeting discussed supporting women’s economic empowerment along with focusing on lagging regions and supporting governance and climate changes, where Dr. Nasr pointed out that the government had several initiatives being implemented within this framework.

Further, the Minister mentioned that the government’s program led by Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouly and submitted to the House of Representatives gave priority to eliminating poverty and enhancing sustainable economic growth through injecting new investments, providing adequate job opportunities and developing sustainable infrastructure.

The Minister asserted the UN’s programs and frameworks had to focus on lagging regions, noting the significance of partnership with the UN which came at a critical and strategic time. She indicated that priority during the upcoming period would be given to developing lagging regions such as Upper Egypt and Sinai.
