Trade and Industry Minister Amr Nassar asserted Egypt’s keenness on achieving African economic integration, according to a released statement by the Trade Ministry.
The minister said the objective could be attained through enhancing the role of regional African economic bodies and maintaining effective integration among them, in a way that contributes to removing tariff and non-tariff restrictions on inter-African trade, citing the supportive and vital efforts in this regard of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) which groups more than 300 million people, with a Gross Domestic Product exceeding 600 billion dollars. Nassar made the remarks on the sidelines of the 20th COMESA summit, which kicked off on Wednesday in the Zambian capital, Lusaka in the presence of a number of heads of COMESA member states. The African continent possesses capabilities, resources and political will enabling it to move toward a better future Nassar noted, calling for rallying efforts of all member states to achieve such target, so that the African continent would be an effective regional and international power. Nassar underlined the importance of benefiting from the African unions and blocs, terming them as a key starting point for consolidating the joint African action. He called on COMESA member states to take part in the first-ever Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) that Egypt is set to host during December 11-17, in cooperation with the African Export–Import Bank. |
