Lebanese Minister of Industry, Hussien Hajj Hassan,visited Syrian Minister of Economy, Samer Khalil, who welcomed him in his office in Damascus, in the presence of Syrian-Lebanese Supreme Council Secretary-General, Nasri Khoury.
Talks between the pair reportedly touched on the status of economic relations between Lebanon and Syria, especially in light of the ramifications of the Syrian conflict on the region. Both men also broached trade prospects between the two countries.. In response to a question, the Syrian Minister made clear that 48 countries were participating in the 60th International Economic Forum in Damascus, in the presence of Arab and foreign businessmen.. For his part, Minister Hajj Hassan underlined the importance of economic relations between the two countries, noting that his visit comes on the sidelines of his participation in the 60th session of the International Forum in Damascus, and where he will meet with more of his Syrian counterparts. "We are on an official visit that illustrates our political and ministerial role," Hajj Hassan explained, highlighting Lebanon’s common interests with Syria and vice versa.. “It is in the interest of Lebanese exporters to open ‘Nassib’ crossing due to the mere fact that any Lebanese businessman of any political affiliation has great interest in the reconstruction of Syria,” Hajj Hassan maintained, However, the Syrian Minister said that this matter would entail further studies and assessment.. The Caretaker Minister went on to explain that the situation in Syria has changed. “The Syrian state has recovered land and refugees are back in their country.. Indeed, Hezbollah assumes a role in this regard,” he added. In turn, the Syrian minister said that communications were ongoing with the Lebanese side, noting that Damascus Forum was an opportunity for the businessmen of Lebanon and Syria to meet. |
