Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte praised Egypt's economic reforms and achievements in many fields, most particularly the major projects that it is implementing to attain economic and social progress, expressing his wish to boost bilateral cooperation in various domains in the coming period.
Presidential spokesman Bassam Radi said that this came during his meeting with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on the sidelines of their participation in the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. He also said that the meeting was the first between the two sides since Conte assumed office in May this year, noting that Sisi congratulated him for his new post. According to Radi, president Sisi underlined during the meeting the history-honored relations between the Egyptian and Italian peoples. He also praised the marked progress in bilateral relations and the positive results of high-level Italian visits to Cairo during the recent period and affirmed keenness on pushing bilateral relations and cooperation to a higher level, he elaborated. Conte asserted his country's desire to further relations with Egypt which he described as a cornerstone of security and stability in the region, the spokesman said. Talks between the two sides took up the issue of the murder of Italian Cambridge University postgraduate student Giulio Regeni in Egypt two years ago, he said, pointing out that Sisi reiterated Egypt's commitment to uncovering the truth about this crime and bringing its perpetrators to justice. The Italian premier expressed his wish that justice would be served and that Regeni’s killers would be held accountable for their crime, saying that accomplishing this will contribute to furthering relations between the two countries, Radi said, noting that he voiced appreciation of the cooperation between the Egyptian and Italian authorities to serve that end. The meeting between Sisi and Conte took up a number of files connected with bilateral relations and shoring up cooperation especially in economic, trade and investment domains, the spokesman said. Discussions also covered a broad range of issues related to the regional situation, the fight against terrorism and illegal migration, in addition to the crises in Libya and Syria, he added. |
