Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Ezz El-Din Abu Steit announced the cancellation of ministerial decision No 669/1991 regarding stockpiling potatoes.
Addressing members of the parliament’s committee on agriculture, irrigation, food security and livestock, the minister revealed that an agricultural map will be drawn up within three weeks to achieve food security in Egypt. The meeting was held to discuss a number of briefing requests submitted by lawmakers about the shortage of potatoes in markets, their increasing price, and the role of the ministries concerned in addressing the issue. Abu Steit noted that Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli issued directives to draw up an agricultural map for the year — a first for the country. The map will include statistics on cultivated areas as well as the size and cost of agricultural products over the past five years, the minister said. The map will be finalised in three weeks, he said, adding that the coordinating food security committee will play its role in taking preemptive measures to face any shortages in agricultural production. |
