The 7th African Trade Ministers meeting kicked off today in Cairo, with the participation of 54 African Union countries, as well as Albert M. Muchanga, the AU commissioner for the Department of Trade and Industry and a number of representatives of international and African organizations.
The two-day conference will consider the progress made concerning outstanding issues related to trade in goods and services. It will also follow up on the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). “The conclusion of the AfCFTA agreement would increase economic growth in member states and boost intra-African trade, which currently make up 28% of the continent’s trade with the whole world,” Nassar said at the meeting. The AfCFTA, one of the flagship projects of the African Union's Agenda 2063, aims to build an integrated market of over one billion consumers in Africa. So far, 49 countries have signed the agreement and eight others have ratified it. |
