Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Mohab Mamish announced that navigation at the Suez Canal recorded the heaviest daily cargo in the history of the waterway with 5.8 million tons.
The cargo was carried by 75 vessels transiting the canal in both directions, he said in a released statement. The south-bound convoy included 40 vessels carrying 2.7 million tons, while the north-bound one included 35 ships laden with 3.1 million tons. The record was achieved when 14 giant vessels crossed the canal each carrying a cargo of 150,000 tons in addition to three giant vessels each with a cargo weighing 100,000 to 150,000 tons. These numbers prove the efficiency of the SCA management in handling the developments of the world trade movement and providing highest quality navigation services, Mamish said. This record figure is a source of pride to SCA especially as it comes during today's bad and difficult weather conditions, he added. It also reflects positively on the canal's revenues and confirm the technical and economic viability of the New Suez Canal, he said. |
