The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Water Resources vehemently rejected an Ethiopian request to be given more time to be ready for signing a final deal on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The last round of talks on the GERD, held in Washington on February 27-28, saw Addis Ababa's deliberate absence to obstruct the negotiation process.

In a joint statement released on Sunday 1/3/2020, the two ministries expressed their astonishment at the Ethiopian request after over five years of extensive talks on this issue.

The Ethiopian statement included several fallacies and distortion of facts, which reflect Addis Ababa's apparent disavowal of its commitments as per international law rules, particularly the provisions of the 2015 Declaration of Principles (DoP), the two ministries said.

They also deplored Addis Ababa's determination to go ahead with filling and operating the dam's reservoir in violation of all international norms.

The two ministries asserted their commitment to the fair and balanced agreement crystallized by the US and the World Bank, which achieves the interests of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia through resolving all pending issues.

Ethiopia hopes the massive $4.8 billion mega project on the Blue Nile, which has been under construction since 2011, will allow it to become Africa's largest power exporter.

Cairo fears the dam will diminish its water supply from the Nile, on which it relies for the vast majority of its fresh water.
