Ambassador of Japan in Cairo Oka Hiroshi and The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Egypt Nasr El-Din Haj El-Amin signed a financing agreement worth approximately $3.8 million to assist the Egyptian government in improving water productivity in the agricultural sector to achieve food security in the country.

The initiative aims to enhance the Egyptian government's efforts to maintain food security by enhancing agricultural water production and adaptability to climate change, the Japanese Embassy said in a statement.

Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Hani Swailem, and Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Egypt Elena Panova, among others, attended the signing ceremony.

The initiative aims to help junior farmers in Upper Egypt and the Nile Delta by establishing solar-powered irrigation infrastructure and pumps, erecting voltaic greenhouses, providing high-efficiency attachments for agricultural tractors, and introducing heat and salinity-resistant crop types, the statement read.

Improving food security and the livelihoods of small farmers in order to increase agricultural water productivity is a top priority for the Egyptian government, as it falls within the strategic framework of the Partnership for Sustainable Development 2023-2027, which includes investments in human capital and environmental sustainability, Mashat said.

The project offers innovative solutions for the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient agriculture sector, in keeping with the goals of the National Platform for Green Projects (NWFE), she added.

In turn, Swailem said that Egypt faces numerous challenges in the water sector as a result of its limited water resources, the negative impact of climate change, and the increase in water needs as a result of high temperatures.

The Egyptian government is implementing major projects to increase water use efficiency and maximize the productivity of water units, he added.
