Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait said the country's new Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS) will be extended to reach all parts of the governorates included in the 1st phase - Suez, Aswan and South Sinai - before the end of the current fiscal year.
During a meeting Tuesday with Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Egypt Office Kato Ken, the two sides signed an executive agreement for a concessional development financing of about 44 billion Japanese yen to back the government's efforts in realizing comprehensive health coverage for all members of Egyptian families. The agreement reflects economic cooperation and friendly relations binding Egypt and Japan, along with efforts meant to further promote the development process in Egypt. According to the minister, the agreement would contribute to extending the umbrella of the national health insurance system across the country; being a key tool for revamping the entire health sector to offer top-notch health services to citizens at affordable prices. For his part, JICA's official stressed the agency's keenness on offering full support to the healthcare scheme, along with conveying the Japanese experiment in this regard to Egypt. The six-phase healthcare scheme, which started experimentally in Port Said governorate in early 2018, was scheduled to cover Egypt by 2032, but, based on President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's instructions, the project will be now completed nationwide by 2027. The project will be supported by state-of-the-art automation technologies - as part of the Digital Egypt strategy - a broader national plan targeting the digitization of all government services countrywide. The first phase of the system includes South Sinai, Aswan and Suez, while the second phase includes the governorates of Qena, the Red Sea and Marsa Matrouh. |
