An investment plan by French company Alstom was approved in principle by the cabinet to establish an industrial complex in Alexandria.

The cabinet will then study the requirements and incentives presented by Alstom, a multinational rolling stock manufacturer, to go ahead with the project.

Alstom proposes to establish two factories, one for the production of electrical systems and railway components such as signals, panels, electrical circuits for control, electrical braids, etc., and the other for all types of mobile units of metro lines, trams, LRT, monorail, express trains and others.

The factories will be established according to the highest international standards and the company's standard specifications.

The products of these factories will also be exported to various countries, while the first production from the mobile units factory will be reserved for the sixth line of the metro.

The site was determined to be the city of Borg al-Arab in Alexandria to facilitate the export of products and the import of raw materials via the port of Alexandria.

The factories will be established on an area of 31 acres, and future expansions are reserved an area of 9 acres, bringing the total area for the two factories to 40 acres.

The project will provide 1,200 job opportunities for Egyptian engineers and technicians. Earlier this year, Egypt inaugurated Tahya Misr station at the Port of Alexandria, which is capable of handling 12 to 15 million tons of merchandise annually and receiving from 6 to 7 ships with large tonnages at the same time.
