The Canadian government has granted Egypt CA$10 million to support the country's efforts towards to food security and tackling climate change, according to a statement released on Monday.
The financing will fund Egypt's programme to boost climate-smart agriculture and agricultural biodiversity to bolster the adaptability in the rural areas that are most affected by climate change in the Delta and Upper Egypt. The programme also aims to decrease the poverty rate. The programme will be implemented over four years (2023-2027) in the governorates of Aswan, Beheira, and Kafr El-Sheikh. The climate-smart agriculture programme seeks to help 4,536 Egyptian farmers adapt to climate change and increase their productivity through technology and innovation. The programme's goals also include supporting biodiversity in at least 144 rural communities. The project will be implemented through cooperation between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Egypt's ministries of environment, agriculture, and local development, and the National Council for Women, said Rania Al-Mashat, minister of international cooperation. Al-Mashat added that the climate-smart agriculture programme will be implemented under the World Bank's $7 billion Country Partnership Framework for Egypt. In June, the Egyptian government announced its updated Nationally Determined Contributions, which includes setting more ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and securing the finances needed |
