Al-Wazir: 7 International Corridors to Connect Production Areas With Sea Ports

The Minister of Transport General Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir confirmed that seven integrated international development logistical corridors are being implemented to connect industrial, agricultural, mining and service production areas to seaports with fast and safe means of transport, passing through dry ports and logistical areas, including (Sokhna - Alexandria, Arish - Taba, Cairo - Alexandria, and Tanta - Mansoura). - Damietta and Jarjoub - Salloum and Cairo - Aswan - Abu Simbel and Safaga - Qena - Abu Tartur).

The Minister of Transport also inspected the new projects in Dekheila Port, which began with the multi-purpose terminal on Berth 100 of the port, where the implementation rate reached 85%, with the aim of increasing the capacity for handling containers and goods by establishing a berth 1,680 meters long and with a total area of 1.26 million square metres.

The minister then went to inspect the project to establish a dry bulk terminal, the implementation rate of which reached 41%. It aims to establish a berth 1,150 meters long and 15 meters deep, and a 300,000 square metre-rear deck capable of receiving 4 ships with a length of 240 metres. It is planned to add an estimated capacity of 6-7 million. tons added/year.

The Minister also reviewed the implementation rates of the project to establish a logistics area on an area of 273 acres. The implementation rate reached 75%, and it includes storage spaces, a number of industries, and river ports to serve the port of Alexandria.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, confirmed that the authority placed the activities and principles of the blue economy at the top of the priorities of its ambitious strategy, when it launched in 2020 the “Green Canal 2030” strategy, as this strategy aspires to transform into a green canal that contributes to reducing... Carbon emissions of ships operating between Asia and Europe, pointing in this regard to the success of the Suez Canal in reducing 55 million tons of carbon emissions and reducing fuel consumption by 17 million tons during the year 2023.

This came during the opening of the activities of the annual International Maritime Transport and Logistics Conference (MARLOG) in its thirteenth edition, organized by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport under the auspices of the League of Arab States and in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport, which began yesterday and continues until tomorrow, in the presence of Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar.

President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Major General Mohamed Taher Al-Sharif, Governor of Alexandria, and Major General Staff Hisham Hosni, Commander of the Northern Military Region, with the participation of a large number of Arab, regional and international maritime transport industry officials.

In his speech, Lieutenant General Rabie pointed to the security and geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab region that have erupted since last November, and which are still casting a shadow on the global maritime scene, as freight loads for ships heading to Red Sea ports rose to $6,800 per container, compared to about $750 per container before the crisis.

About the high costs of ship fuel and the high cost of ship insurance, sometimes reaching 10 times the insurance value prior to the crisis, which are unprecedented challenges facing the maritime transport industry and affecting navigation rates in the Suez Canal.
