Egypt is aiming for a substantial boost in renewable energy output, with a target of 45,000 megawatts from projects currently under construction, as highlighted by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, during a recent Cabinet meeting.
Esmat emphasized that the existing combined capacity from wind and solar energy stands at approximately 4.6 gigawatts, while hydroelectric energy capacity currently reaches 2,832 megawatts. The Minister provided insights into the ongoing projects set to come online before the summer of 2025. Furthermore, he outlined the status of projects under construction slated for completion in the 2026/2027 timeframe, including high-capacity projects generating up to 28 gigawatts of wind energy. Esmat also discussed the evolution of loads on the national electricity grid, noting a peak point on July 22 when loads surged to 38 gigawatts. Highlighting inter-ministerial collaboration, Esmat mentioned the joint efforts between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to mitigate the impact of the electricity cutoff plan initiated on July 20, 2024, and set to run until September 15, 2024. In a recent development, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly revealed that Egypt's daily energy consumption has surpassed 37 gigawatts in July, marking a 12 percent increase from the previous year and indicating a shortfall of 4 gigawatts in meeting the nation's energy needs. |
