Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad had a meeting with Slovakia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba, the Slovak ambassador in Cairo and their accompanying delegation to discuss boosting bilateral cooperation in the fields of circular economy and waste recycling.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12), held in Cairo, with the participation of 37,000 persons from 180 countries. The five-day forum is held, under the theme "It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities", under the aegis of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. During the meeting, Fouad welcomed her Slovak counterpart, expressing her aspiration to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the areas of the environment, particularly in light of the same environmental challenges facing the two countries in the areas of water, waste, optimal use of land, and citizen awareness. Egypt has placed the issue of environment and climate change on the top of its agenda since President Abdel Fattah El Sisi took the helm in 2014, Fouad said. Since 2014, Egypt assumed its pioneering role in Africa and leading the African negotiations by chairing the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), then holding the presidency of the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP14) and hosting the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022, the minister said. Fouad also listened to the Slovak experiment in plastic recycling to derive best practices and exchange expertise with the two countries' private sectors in this field. She stressed that Egypt is working hard in this field to reduce plastic waste, particularly with the approaching of the fifth session of Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The meeting is scheduled to take place from November 25 to 1 December 2024, at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center in Busan, Republic of Korea. Egypt is working on two axes: reducing the use of single-use plastic bags and creating alternatives to them, she further noted. For his part, the Slovak minister reviewed his country's experiment in recycling plastic waste, including single-use plastic bags, noting that Slovakia is the first country in the European Union to establish plastic bag recycling units. Slovakia had the highest recycling rate of plastic packaging waste in the European Union (EU-27), he noted. |
