An ambitious plan is studied for raising the annual value of the Egyptian exports of cotton from USD 1 to 5 billions by 2010.
Such plan involves developing the sector of weaving and spinning in Egypt, in addition to increasing the number of workers employed in such sector to reach 2 million. An effective strategy is planned for producing, pricing and marketing cotton and related products, taking into consideration the needs of farmers, buyers and manufacturers. One of the most important considerations for raising the cotton production is to increase the cultivation of the middle fiber cottons. Also allowing for importing short and middle size fiber cottons and continuing the free-trade strategy. It is important to mention that the total export contracts of the Egyptian cotton since the beginning of the export season last October have reached two million and 147 thousand kentars with a total price of USD 196 million. |
