His Majesty King Abdullah II discussed with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland bilateral cooperation, the latest developments in the Middle East as well as issues of common interest. The King stressed keenness to forge closer cooperation with the Strasburg-based council to achieve common interests and enhance Jordanian-European partnership in various fields.
At the meeting, which was attended by Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and Director of the King's Office Imad Fakhoury, the King reviewed Jordan's reform march as well as steps taken to enhance democracy, develop political life and expand public participation in decision making. On Middle East, peace, His Majesty urged the international community to help the Palestinians and Israelis to return to the negotiating table and discuss all final status issues, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Jagland expressed appreciation of efforts led by King Abdullah to achieve political, economic and social reforms. He also stressed readiness of the 47-member states council to assist the Kingdom in this regard |
