An agreement was signed between the Ministry of Planning and Cooperation and the European Union (EU) related to developing shanty towns. According to the agreement, the EU is granting Egypt 20 million Euros (LE 150 million) to improve living conditions and services in shanty areas in Cairo and Giza. An agreement was signed in this regard in July.
The 20-million-Euro deal will be implemented in cooperation with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). Putting their signatures to the agreement were the head of the GTZ sector for the Mediterranean, Europe and Central Asia and the head of the EU delegation to Egypt James Moran. The fund will go to developing Ezbet el-Nasr and Ain Shams slums in Cairo and Masaken Geziret el-Dahab and Hekr Abbas in Giza.
