Germany's visiting Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced 70 million euro in humanitarian aid to Iraq.
Speaking at a joint news conference with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, Steinmeier said his country had allocated humanitarian aid worth 70 million euro to Iraq as of next year. He added that Germany would also build five field hospitals in Iraq's northern Sinjar City which had been recently retaken from the ISIL, in an effort to encourage people to return home soon. The German foreign minister also vowed to provide Iraq with military aid, mainly satellite images for ISIL sites. Steinmeier arrived in Baghdad earlier in the day for an unannounced visit to Iraq. "The stabilization of Iraq is just as important as the search for a political solution in Syria," Steinmeier said after arriving. Steinmeier reiterated that Germany would stand at Iraq's side "in truly difficult and stormy times." He has also held talks with Iraqi President Fuad Masum, Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi. The visit was not announced publicly until Steinmeier landed in Baghdad because of security concerns. |
