Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said the UK exit from the European Union (EU) would economically affect the Arab region.
During a Ramdan Iftar, the minister added that the global stock markets and emerging stock markets in developing countries were negatively affected by the outcome of the Brexit. On Egyptian-US relations if Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump takes office, the minister described the two countries' ties as "strategic", adding that relations would not be affected whatever the party that rules the US. He added that whatever the polices of the winning party, Washington is aware of Egypt's regional role in the Middle East and its influential status in this important region, while Egypt, in turn, recognizes the weight of the US as a major power that extended aid to Egypt over the past 30 years. "Nothing makes us worried regarding the results of the US presidential elections because relations between the two countries are deeply-rooted and strategic, regardless of who wins the elections," Shoukry stressed. On Iran, the foreign minister called on Tehran to stop interference in the Arab national security. "Iran is a major regional country and a member state of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, but our stance on Iran depends on its stance on the Arab countries and issues, particularly the Gulf Arab countries and the security of the Arabian Gulf," he said. On Syria, Shoukry said that Egypt believes that the conflict there cannot be resolved by military means, and the negotiating track should be adopted. |
