 Egypt’s trade and industry ministry said that Russia has agreed to lift a ban on the import of Egyptian fruits and vegetables, as the North African country will take every precaution to guarantee the safety and quality of its agricultural imports heading to Russia.
Russia said on 16 September it would temporarily suspend the import of fruit and vegetables from Egypt starting 22 September. Russia's lifting of the ban came after intensive efforts on both sides to address the reasons behind the decisions and take the necessary procedures to lift it, the trade ministry statement read. An Egyptian delegation visited Russia on Sunday to discuss the ban. The ban was imposed after Cairo rejected a Russian wheat shipment for containing the common ergot grain fungus. Cairo has since amended its rules and agreed to buy Russian wheat, accepting shipments with low levels of the fungus. According to the ministry statement, Egyptian agricultural products exported to Russia are estimated at $350 million annually. |
