Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr signed a grant agreement with Director General of the European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson for the promotion of women's rights in Egypt.
The grant, provided by the European Union, is equal to €10 million and will be allocated for work by the National Council for Women. The minister said this grant agreement will contribute to the national plan which aims to prevent female circumcision and empower families. Nasr expressed how pleased she was to sign this agreement which she said would contribute to the empowerment of Egyptian women in 2017, declared earlier by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as the Year of Egyptian Women. Sisi had instructed for women to be integrated into development, to have equal employment opportunities and to play an active role in Egypt's economic growth, Nasr explained. "The best means to combat terrorism is to support sustainable development," she said, noting that she is sending a message to the world that the government of Egypt along with its partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector seek to develop Egypt's economy which would contribute to achieving stability in the region. The government's social and economic program aims to remove all obstacles in implementing of projects, which the state looks forward to achieving as soon as possible. This will be achieved through several axes that focus on the developmental stimulus by encouraging the private sector to promote economic development and create a good investment climate in Egypt, Nasr mentioned. In addition the program, the government seeks to plan and implement serious programs that invest in human capital and infrastructure, and improve the standard of living for Egyptians, she mentioned. The EU pays special attention to gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in light of the Year of Egyptian Women, said Danielsson. The participation of women in the labor force will have a positive impact on economic development in the country, he added. The program aims at protecting and promoting women's rights in addition to enhancing their role in society and their contribution to development, said Danielsson. He pointed out that the total EU countries' funding and grants to Egypt have reached €11 billion so far. |
